If your shortlist still says Windsurf, the product is Devin Desktop

Cognition renamed Windsurf to Devin Desktop on 2 June 2026. The company said the Agent Command Center became the default surface, the VS Code-compatible editor stayed, and existing Windsurf plans and extensions carried over through an over-the-air update. The product page repeats the same claim: Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf.

We are publishing this in September because comparison tabs still say Windsurf, and because Bookmarkit’s catalog had Devin (the cloud worker) without the desktop IDE under its current name. The new profile is Devin Desktop.

  • Devin Desktop: local IDE plus agent manager. This is the Windsurf lineage.
  • Devin Cloud: the long-running agent on its own machine.
  • Devin CLI and Devin Review: terminal and diff review in the same family.
  • Cognition also said Desktop launched with Agent Client Protocol support so Codex, Claude Agent, OpenCode, and other ACP agents can run inside it.

If you are scoring Cognition against Cursor or Google Antigravity, use Desktop. If you are scoring an unattended repo worker, use Devin. Putting both on one row hides the price and the failure mode.

What to confirm if you still have a Windsurf contract

  1. Confirm the binary you run identifies as Devin Desktop and that the update actually landed.
  2. Ask whether legacy Windsurf Enterprise login and update hosts still apply to your tenant. Cognition’s FAQ said some enterprise endpoints stayed on windsurf.com and codeiumdata.com.
  3. Re-run one real ticket in the Agent Command Center and one in the editor-only view so you know which surface people will actually use.
  4. If you adopted Windsurf for Cascade, ask what Devin Local replaced and whether Cascade remains a toggle. Do not assume the June post is still the runtime.
